P0038 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Circuit High Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2

About Trouble Code P0038

If high voltage is detected through the heated oxygen sensor heater circuit the engine’s computer will detect it and issue trouble code P0038. The powertrain control module uses the inputs of the heated oxygen sensors to determine oxygen content in the exhaust system.

Symptoms of Trouble Code P0038

Typically, the only symptom of trouble code P0038, is the illumination of the check engine light.

Causes of Trouble Code P0038

You may find damage in the bank one sensor two heated oxygen sensor or an open in the heater control circuit. There could also be an open ground circuit or a short to the ground on the heater control circuit.

How to Fix Trouble Code P0038

You will want to validate the error code by clearing it, driving the vehicle, and verifying that the code returns. If it does, you will want to inspect the wiring and connections to the heat oxygen sensor and the engine’s computer for signs of corrosion or damage. If any is found, replace them. You may notice bare wires near the connections, this is a common problem for causing shorts. If this all appears fine, you will want to unplug the bank 1 sensor two and verify that there is the correct voltage with the engine off and the key turned over. You may need to remove the O2 sensor and check for damage. Replace it if any damage is found. Perform a resistance test, infinite resistance shows an open in the heater and you may again need to replace the O2 sensor.
