P0036 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Control Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 2

About Trouble Code P0036

Trouble code P0036 occurs when the air to fuel ratio in the exhaust is being read as incorrect by the heated oxygen sensor. A specific air to fuel ratio of 14.7 to 1 is needed engine to perform properly.

Symptoms of Trouble Code P0036

The response time of the O2 sensor will be affected if the heater circuit is not working properly. There may be a lack in response or no response at all. This will not allow the engine’s computer to control the fuel mixture. Forcing a failsafe mode until the error is fixed, it will go into a fixed fuel mix. Likely, there will be no other symptoms of this trouble code.

Causes of Trouble Code P0036

The cause of P0036 is improper data collected from the engine’s computer from the Heated Oxygen Sensor for engine bank 1, sensor 2. There may be corrosion or damage to the wiring and while quite uncommon, there may be a problem in the engine’s computer itself.

How to Fix Trouble Code P0036

Verify the code’s validity by clearing it, taking the vehicle for a drive, and confirming that the code returns. If it does, there can be several issues, check the wiring for damage from excessive heat. This is one of the most common fixes. You may need to check the voltage from the fused battery feed to the heating element. If there is no voltage, you will need to fix the open or short in the circuit. Look for blown fuses that may need replaced. If the circuit is ok, you probably need to replace a bad Heated Oxygen Sensor.
