P0034 - Turbo/Super Charger Bypass Valve Control Circuit Low

About Trouble Code P0034

There are varying definitions for this trouble code, based off of the manufacturer’s system. Trouble Code P0034 generally means there is an error in the bypass system for the turbo or supercharger in its ability to relieve intake air pressure. This can be partially or completely depending on the design. This code specifies that the pressure is low and can impede proper engine operation.

Symptoms of Trouble Code P0034

When the engine’s computer detects failure, it will illuminate the check engine light. The bypass valve control circuit will have a low current or open circuit and the computer will not be able to control it for the turbo or supercharger. There will be a loss in engine power.

Causes of Trouble Code P0034

Several problems can lead to this trouble code, including poor fitting or damaged air intake hoses, pipes, intercoolers or clamps. A partially or completely open turbocharger bypass valve can prevent boost and cause this trouble code to appear. A low boost may indicate that the pressure in the system is leaking and preventing correct power and operation of the vehicle.

How to Fix Trouble Code P0034

Once the code has been verified by clearing it and taking the vehicle for a drive, seeing the code reappear, you will want to pressure test the intake system between the turbo or supercharger and the intake throttle valve. This will prove that the pressure is lower than the specifications. Check the intake hoses, pipes, and clamps for damage or signs of deterioration and replace them if these things are seen. If they look good check the bypass valve to see if it is slightly or completely open, allowing pressure to escape. If that looks normal also, you may need to replace the pressure sensor.
