P0022 - Intake Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Retarded (Bank 2)

About Trouble Code P0022

Trouble code P0022 means the engine’s computer has found that the intake camshaft timing for bank 2 is more retarded than what it is telling it to be. This condition can be occurring during the advancing or retarding phase of the camshaft timing.

Symptoms of Trouble Code P0022

Naturally, the engine’s computer will trigger the check engine light. While driving it may be noticed that there is a decrease in fuel economy, and the engine may hesitate during acceleration. The vehicle will likely fail an emissions test due to excessive fumes.

Causes of Trouble Code P0022

There may be flow problems in the oil from the Variable Camshaft Timing piston to the phaser. The phaser may be damaged or stuck in the retarded position. The oil control valve for the Variable Camshaft may be stuck in an open position also giving you trouble code P0022.

How to Fix Trouble Code P0022

Start with clearing the code and taking the vehicle for a drive to validate that the trouble code resurfaces. Check for proper oil viscosity and a clean filter, these are simple fixes. Next, check for corrosion or damage to the wiring and connections in the camshaft oil control valve. You may need to replace the oil control valve for the bank 2 camshaft. Another fix, may be in the timing chain alignment and camshaft phasers, check these for damage.
