Causes of Trouble Code P0021

Trouble Code P0021 occurs when the camshaft is more advanced that the computer has told it to be. If the Oil Control Valve connected to the bank 2 camshaft is clogged or stuck, you may also see this trouble code. One other cause would be if the camshaft phaser is stuck in the advanced position.

How to Fix Trouble Code P0021

Start with validating the code by clearing it, driving the vehicle and verifying that the code resurfaces. Once verified, check the viscosity of the oil and check the oil filter to make sure they match factory specifications. Look over the wiring to the camshaft oil control valve for the bank 2 intake camshaft. You may need to replace it. Also, spend the time to look at the timing chain and camshaft phasers, these may need replacement.
