P0017 - Crankshaft Position Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor B

About Trouble Code P0017

Trouble code P0017 will surface when the crankshaft and camshaft position sensor’s signals are night correlating, for bank 1. These signals are used to give the powertrain control module information, so it can control ignition timing and sometimes control over fuel injection.

Symptoms of Trouble Code P0017

As soon as the engine’s computer notices the problem it will trigger the check engine light. There may be an overall lack of power or the engine may run erratically. Fuel mileage will more than likely decrease and there could be rough running during acceleration.

Causes of Trouble Code P0017

Check the position of the timing chain, if it is out of position it can cause the valve timing to also be out of position. There could be an exhaust timing gear problem with the phaser, this would cause misalignment in the camshaft. Other causes of P0017 are problems with the oil viscosity or clogged passages preventing oil flow to the phaser. If the oil Control Valve has a restriction to the Oil Control Valve Filter you could also see this trouble code.

How to Fix Trouble Code P0017

Checking the code for validity is essential. First, clear the code. Then take the vehicle for a drive and see if the trouble code resurfaces. If it does, you may need to replace the camshaft position sensor on the failed camshaft bank. Make sure to look over the wiring connection to the camshaft sensor and the Oil Control Valve. If you notice signs of corrosion or malfunction, then these will need replaced. Timing gears, chains, and guides in both engine banks may also need replaced. If none of these fixes keep P0017 away, there could be a problem within the engine’s computer.
