P0015 - Exhaust Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Retarded (Bank 1)

About Trouble Code P0015

Trouble code P0015 happens when the engine’s computer finds that the exhaust camshaft timing for bank 1 is more delayed than what it is being told. This condition can be seen during the advancing or retarding phase.

Symptoms of Trouble Code P0015

The driver may complain of erratic driving depending on the position of the failed camshaft. The engine may have a hard time starting due to the low power condition caused by the delayed timing position. Fuel efficiency will decrease and there may be stalling during idle and driving times.

Causes of Trouble Code P0015

The camshaft may have shifted incorrectly causing a trouble code P0015. You could also see this if the variable camshaft timing oil control valve is stuck open. Clogged oil passes or damage can make the camshaft phaser get stuck in a retarded position. A broken phaser spring or continuous oil flow to the variable camshaft timing can trigger this trouble code.

How to Fix Trouble Code P0015

You should always verify the validity of the trouble code by clearing the code, driving the vehicle and seeing if the code reappears. You may need to replace the camshaft phasers for both camshaft banks. Look over the wiring and connections for corrosion or obvious damage. If there is a problem with the camshaft oil control valve for bank 1 it may need replaced. Taking time to check the timing chain and guides may also be necessary.
