P0011 - Intake Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Advanced (Bank 1)

The engine’s computer will give a trouble code P0011, when the bank 1 intake camshaft is advanced beyond what the engine’s computer has told it to be. Typically, the advanced condition is during advancing or retarding in the camshaft’s timing.

Symptoms of Trouble Code P0011

The engine’s computer will trigger the check engine light and try to put the camshaft into it’s normal starting position. If the cam is stack the engine may have a hard time starting. Fuel efficiency will decrease, and a rough ride may ensue. When given emissions screenings the vehicle may exceed federal levels. Less often seen, is camshaft failure due to a lack of correct lubrication.

Causes of Trouble Code P0011

Some of the issues that can cause a trouble code P0011 to occur are clogged passages to the oil control valve or oil that is to thick to pass through and becomes clogged in the camshaft phasers. The camshaft phasers could be stuck in the advanced position.

How to Fix Trouble Code P0011

First, reset the trouble code and take the vehicle for a drive to ensure it is a legitimate trouble code. Once validated, change the oil filter and the oil, make sure to use the proper oil for the engine specifications. Check the camshaft oil control valve for the bank 1 camshaft for deterioration or corrosion. There could be problems with the wiring to the camshaft oil control valve. If none of these are the problem observe the timing chain alignment, you may see jumping and timing problems.
