P0009 - Engine Position System Performance - Bank 1

About Trouble Code P0009

This trouble code triggers the check engine light when a variation is found in the mechanical timing between the crankshaft and the bank 2 camshaft. The sensors find a problem with the position of the crankshaft and camshaft. The mechanical timing is off, and the sensor signals the control of the ignition and fuel timing.

Symptoms of Trouble Code P0009

The symptoms of P0009 are minimal. You may see decreased idle quality and poor fuel economy. Overall engine performance will diminish as the problem worsens.

Causes of Trouble Code P0009

Many things can cause a trouble code P0009 to trigger the check engine light. Look for worn timing components and wiring damage. Stretched or incorrect timing chains are a possible trigger. The engine timing may be out of sync or there may be a malfunction in the crankshaft or camshaft sensor. If none of these are your solution, the engine’s computer software may be out of date or there may be damage to the computer itself.

How to Fix Trouble Code P0009

Verify that trouble code P0009 is valid by clearing the code, taking the vehicle for a drive, and proving that the code is accurate when the check engine light illuminates. You will want to verify that the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets align with the timing marks. Look for wear and overall condition of the timing belt and chain. If no problems are found here there may be an internal problem with the engine’s computer.
