P0008 - Engine Position System Performance - Bank 1

About Trouble Code P0008

A trouble code P0008 is the result in a problem in the engine’s mechanical timing. The engine computer’s sensors have identified a variation in the timing between the bank 1 camshaft and the crankshaft. The sensors look at positioning, so the computer can control the ignition and fuel timing appropriately.

Symptoms of Trouble Code P0008

As with all trouble codes, the check engine light will be triggered, bringing attention to the problem. There may be poor idle quality and fuel economy. The engine’s performance will suffer overall. On occasion, you may notice noise from under the hood near the timing covers.

Causes of Trouble Code P0008

P0008 has many possible causes. The engine’s timing may be out of sync. There could also be worn chains or gears. Sensor malfunctions in the crankshaft or camshaft are a possibility. Other causes could be wiring damage, internal damage to the engine’s computer, or out of date software within the engine’s computer.

How to Fix Trouble Code P0008

Check to make sure the trouble code is valid by clearing the codes, driving the vehicle, and confirming the code resurfaces. After confirmation, check the timing marks on the crank and camshaft sprockets. If this is not the problem, look for signs of deterioration in the timing chain and timing belt. It is important to note that this is a known issue in some GM engines.
